This place has been created for a more relaxed Bondi experience. It’s not the air-conditioned full-on glitz of real estate magazines, but more like the coastal shacks that Aussies knew when they were growing up, where you can share a quiet beer or two or three as you chat and watch the sun going down. It’s not about a high-consumption show for awkward guests. You’ve got all the mod-cons: big TVs, new gas cooker and oven, family-size dishwasher, fridge, microwave, washing machine, etc., but you’re not in a glossy design-world. You can relax here: a place that appreciates that being at home means above all else, feeling comfortable.
This typical Bondi inter-war art-deco flat has been radically made over with a major roof rebuild that’s created a wonderfully contemporary living area that stretches, deck to deck, for all of twenty metres. There’s art on the walls and there’s even art on the ceiling; there’s books to read while you’re here and magazines to take when you leave; there’s scrabble and monopoly; there’s two bathrooms, one with a big bath and a shower that can cope with a few people at a time; there’s 1960s furniture that didn’t come from a replica shop; there’s funky lighting options for night-time pleasure; And there’s a sun-drenched terrace with a garden to give you the fresh herbs for your salads and all. There’s authentic beach-shack louvres which open wide to let in all the air then close to keep out the drenching tropical rain that Sydney can get.
Consett Ave is Bondi’s best little street, minutes from the beach, a quiet short tree-lined one-way street from Lamrock Ave to Hall Street, its houses built in the 1910s on sand hills, several of them heritage listed. 16 Consett was originally a single-storey house but in 1928, it went up a storey to become four flats. The building looks plain enough from the street, and even when you’ve come up the single flight of terracotta stairs to the first-floor landing. But open the front door and you find another storey.
Look first along the corridor to your left, lined with books and with space for hanging clothes. The first door leads to the bathroom: Italian basin and toilet, large mirror, lots of glass shelving, fixed shower-head plus another with flexible hose, plus large bath. It’s open, so you can splash around. There’s also a front-loading washing machine here, tucked in under the stairs.
Two doors each lead to a bedroom, both with queen-sized double beds and individual reading lights, and lots of storage. The first is smaller but still spacious, while the master bedroom is expansive, with a 2m high ceiling. During the day, there’s great natural light from three sides, and a high bi-fold door opens onto a west-facing green garden. This is a restful sunny multi-use room with lounge chairs and a coffee table, and an office desk, with a cable through to the Panasonic flat-screen TV, and a DVD player.
Upstairs, which is where that you’ll be spending most time, is a massive pavilion sitting in a 360§ garden. You look out and see sky and the wide green valley that slopes down to Bondi’s beach. Half of the space here is a sitting and lounging area with 1960’s easy chairs plus a glass-topped desk and bi-fold glass doors opening onto a small deck area. The other half, facing west, contains a brand new kitchen, a 60s kitchen table with eight matching chairs, plus leather and chrome 60s lounge chairs. This leads directly out through glass bi-fold doors onto a spacious sunny terrace, where there’s a outdoor table, folding wooden chairs, and a long wooden cushioned lounge along the balustrade. There’s a Weber BBQ out here. There’s a second funky bathroom up here too, with toilet, basin and shower, based on a design used in a small pied-â¦-terre in Paris.
This is the perfect spot for you to enjoy the relaxed contemporary beach-side living that’s made Bondi famous worldwide.
